Oak Lawn Park District Dance Instructor Makes a Difference

Published 2/27/2024

Oak Lawn Park District Dance student and instructor, Lily O’Dea has created a permanent donation bin in the Oak View Center & Museum (4625 W. 110th St.) as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. It is made for dancers to donate their shoes so they can be reused by future dancers.

Lily is currently a co-captain for the IndepenDANCE Dance Team and a senior at Richards HS.  The Girl Scout Gold is the highest award that a Girl Scout can receive in their scouting journey.  The award is earned by finding an issue in your community that you care about, learning about it from trusted resources, finding a plan to tackle it, having the project reviewed by the Girl Scout council, then sharing the story to help and inspire others to make a difference.

“With the permission of the Oak Lawn Park District, I have created a permanent dance donation shoe bin, said Lily. “This donation bin is located across from the dance office at the Oak View Center. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!”

WHAT TO DONATE:

  •  Gently used or brand-new dance shoes in all colors and sizes- specifically tap, jazz, ballet and character shoes.

·      HOW TO DONATE:

  •      Tie are strap one dance show to the matching pair, pull the bin handle and drop your shoes into the opening.

HOW TO REUSE:

  •  Please let your dance teacher know the exact size and style of shoe you were looking for, and we will check the availability.

“Lily has been dancing with the Park District for the past 15 years. It’s been an honor and a privilege to be her teacher here at the Infiniti Dance Company and hard to believe this is her last year, said performing arts supervisor Dawn Farrell, “I’m so proud she chose something dance related to achieve the Girl Scout Gold Award. This project will help dancers for years to come and we have Lily to thank for it!
