It is only 10 years old, but the Stony Creek Golf Course has already hit a growth spurt. Conceived as an idea to bring in revenue for the Oak Lawn Park District in the early 1980s, the course began life at a groundbreaking ceremony on July 4, 1992, attended by more than 200 people. The 18-hole executive course was designed by architect Carl Goetz of the William E. Rose Architectural Company and built by Wadsworth Construction, who completed construction in the spring of 1994.

In the summer of 1994, the golf course opened adjacent to an established driving range and miniature golf course, which featured donated obstacles from Western Trails, previously located at 110th St. and Cicero Ave.

The course officially opened to the public on July 1, 1984, a week after the Grand Opening Golf Classic—an event sponsored by the Oak Lawn Parks Foundation. Seventy-six eager golfers were able to enjoy the course during a shotgun-start outing and dinner, designed as a fundraiser for Stony Creek. The course quickly became a popular attraction in Oak Lawn for golfers from all over the area as a new place to play, and for kids and adults anxious to learn the sport.

In November 2001, Stony Creek expanded its appeal beyond the golf crowd with the opening of the completely rebuilt Stony Creek Clubhouse. The new clubhouse—replacing a small concession stand and pro shop—included an elegant bar and grill, complete with a stone fireplace and huge windows facing the scenic greens of the course. An expanded pro shop is also housed there, as well as two indoor golf simulators (for year-round golfing) and a video-game room. Beyond its covered patio, the clubhouse offers lighted bocce-ball courts (which convert to an ice rink in the winter months), horseshoe pits and beautiful landscaping. In September 2002, the clubhouse received a Village Beautification Award from the Village of Oak Lawn’s Business Development Committee for its English Tudor design and pleasing landscape, which features a mix of evergreen plants, ornamental and pampas grasses, and perennial flowers.

This spring the course will bloom once again. The rebuilt miniature golf course will entertain young and old with its waterfall, fountain and boulder design. All 18 holes have been redesigned for a back-to-nature style with added excitement from elaborate waterways.

The Oak Lawn Park District hopes that you will enjoy Stony Creek this season and the next, as the course celebrates its 10th birthday this summer and the park district enjoys its 60th this fall.
