The Oak Lawn Park District is proud to celebrate staff member and performer Brandi Shantele, who won Best Actress in a Musical at the 2025 Black Theatre Alliance Awards (BTAA). Shantele was nominated for her exceptional performance in Dreamgirls with The Drama Group, which was also nominated for Best Revival (Musical).
In addition to her on-stage achievements, Brandi is a cherished member of the Oak Lawn Park District staff, where she has been a dance instructor for several years. She teaches dance to kids of all ages and leads the Park District’s IndepenDANCE Team, inspiring young dancers through her creativity, energy, and passion for the performing arts.
Brandi has showcased her talents in the Oak Lawn Park District Community Theatre, with standout performances in productions such as Sister Act and Hairspray. Her BTAA nomination reflects both her artistic excellence and her ongoing dedication to uplifting the local arts community.
“We are so proud of Brandi. We love her excitement, enthusiasm for the arts, and her dedication to improving each dancer that comes through her classes,” said Tom Hartwig, executive director. “We are so fortunate that she chooses to showcase her extraordinary talent on our stage at the Erica Heilmann Theatre. She is must-see every time she is in one of our performances. Her voice is powerful, leaving audiences inspired every time she steps on stage.”
The Black Theatre Alliance Awards honor artistic excellence in the African American theatre community throughout the Chicagoland area. This year’s awards feature 22 categories recognizing over 90 talented artists from more than twenty productions. The ceremony took place Monday, October 27, 2025, at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago.
The Oak Lawn Park District congratulates Brandi and all 2025 BTAA nominees for their achievements and contributions to Chicago’s vibrant theatre scene.
